TRANSFORM FEAR TO EXCITEMENT
Resistance. We all know about it. It is like the two weeks prior to hiking The Stawamus Chief, where my daughter worried and whined that she would not be able to do it. Or like the two years prior to my Yoga Therapy course, where I routinely convinced myself that surely someone or something would sabotage the completion. Do these limiting self beliefs and thoughts sound familiar? They certainly do not serve us well.
To rise above our negative self-talk, along with the environmental and social chaos in the world today, it can be a challenge to know where to start. Trusting and moving forward when there is trepidation does not come easy, especially if you have experienced trauma in your life. And we have all experienced trauma in one form or another. Yes, to varying degrees each of us has been faced with a memorable event (perceived as negative) that will be remembered for far too long. These memories can bring discomfort and manifest in the form of fear, anxiety, depression, anger, irritability, or plain old negativity. At some point during the last 6 months of this pandemic, have you felt emotionally charged by ‘undesirable changes’ and a ‘loss of control’ from the transpiring events? If your stress symptoms were mild, then adapting mentally and physically was likely easy and you have long forgotten the impositions placed upon us. However, for those with bolder imprints of traumatic stress, learning to regulate the nervous system on a moment to moment basis, can be an on-going journey.
With a lot of help from yoga and loved ones, my personal journey through trauma has been transformational. It is with curiosity and excitement that I continue to be aware of, acknowledge and work through limiting self beliefs. In the next few weeks, I will graduate from my Yoga Therapy studies, which feels like quite the accomplishment! And thankfully, my immediate family and friends have not been directly affected by the corona virus in the form of serious infections, hospitalizations, or deaths, so we managed to have a very enjoyable summer in BC. COVID 19 has brought with it many changes and opportunities for growth. Since the only thing we much control over is ourselves and our response to things, it is my hope that you too have been taking care of your mental, emotional, and physical health. If that has been troublesome, I am confident that yoga has the tools to guide you to be the healthiest, happiest you. Please see my offerings below, and may this quote by Confucius bring a heart-warming memory or smile: “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.”
