‘Patience is a virtue,’ my grandmother always used to say. As a young girl, the concept of a virtue was often difficult to understand. Now as an adult, I find it is the patience aspect of this phrase that has me more perplexed! Why is it that being patient with family is often the most challenging practice of all? Through yoga, I have explored that question time and again over the last eight years.
Working closely with my mother (Ellen) at the studio, I have learned a lot about myself, relationships, and patience, to fortunately find that we have grown together. This month however, we are making a transition to explore a different kind of family caring. Although I will miss her and her peaceful presence at the studio, we are looking forward to having a more usual mother and daughter relationship.
With Thanksgiving approaching, it’s a great time to cultivate more awareness of the virtues you may be challenged with. To initiate these types of reflections and meditations, regular yoga attendance will help. Meet our lovely team of teachers at the studio, or perhaps take in our Fall Yoga Retreat & Cleanse October 14th to 17th.
Have a loving Thanksgiving weekend, and we look forward to serving you soon.
btw, this is a big public THANK YOU to my mama for all her love and support over the years!
This month’s honorable mention goes to Joani Bye and Mike Battie. Congratulations you two! It’s so inspiring for us to see couples and families coming into the studio together. Joani says, “Mike started practicing yoga to balance out his physical job as a juggler, then convinced me to come to Body Harmony with him. That was almost three years ago, and we’ve been going several times a week ever since.
As avid tennis players, we find the stretch and strengthening yoga offers extremely beneficial, but we also love the breathing and meditational portion of the practice and find that it helps with focus and relaxation not only on the tennis court, but in all aspects of everyday life.
The instruction is consistently high quality, and each instructor brings a different approach to the class, which keeps it fresh and interesting.
We love the feeling of the studio itself – as soon as you walk in, there’s a calm, peaceful atmosphere. We enjoy it from the warm welcome at the front desk to the Namaste at the end of class. Thanks, Body Harmony!!”

Dr. Wayne Dyer brings his latest work to Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Tuesday, November 23rd. Use special promotional code SHIFT at www.ticketmaster.ca and save 20%!
How do we make The Shift and bring true purpose and happiness to our lives? The Shift doesn’t mean that we lose our drive and ambition; it signifies that we become ambitious about something new. We make a commitment to living a life based on experiencing meaning and feeling purposeful, rather than a life based on never-ending demands and false promises that are the trademark of the ego’s agenda.
As we contemplate leaving the morning of our life, where ego has played a commanding role, and entering the afternoon (and evening), where meaning and purpose replace ambition and struggle, we may encounter unexpected occurrences that accompany this new direction. It’s almost a universal law that we’ll experience a fall of some kind. Yet these falls or low points provide the energy we need to move away from ego and into a life of meaning and purpose.
Not only is brown rice better for you than white, it’s more environmentally friendly too! To create white rice, the germ and the inner husk (bran) is removed; the grain is then polished, usually using glucose or talc. So not only are you adding more processes and chemicals, but you’re loosing out on the most nutritious part of the grain!
The crazy thing is that these added steps to turn brown rice to white remove nutrients that are sometimes then introduced back in via synthetic sources – this is called fortified white rice. The same type of thing happens in brown bread vs. white bread scenario.
The loss of nutrients is broad and substantial with white rice having a lot less Vitamin E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folacin, Potassium, Magnesium, Iron and over dozen other nutrients. Plus, white rice has about a quarter of the dietary fibre as brown.
So do both yourself and the environment a favor and make the switch!
